Hamburger
A dark comedy about sexual politics in the workplace.
"Lib, played by Mina James, is a dynamic character. ... Her acting was startling in all the right ways."
"This show proved to be intimate, funny, and charming, with a hint of sexual tension." "Intricate detail. ... Not to be missed." ~ Mooney On Theatre |
"Parsons (despite stepping into the role two days before the preview) delivers a strong performance as the sexually inappropriate and awkward Arie."
"This new comedic two-hander might have us coming back for seconds." ~ NOW Magazine |
Written while attending the Stratford Festival Playwrights Retreat and developed by the Registry Theatre's ActOne Festival in Kitchener. After a 30-minute version of Hamburger was staged in Kitchener we premiered the full-length version at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Then, with the support of the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, the Midtown Radio Project helped us to adapt it into an audio play for internet radio during pandemic-era digitization of theatre.

"I’ve worked a great deal in the food industry. Hamburger is my theatrical love-letter to that environment. The fast pace, deep passion, and intense heat of a commercial kitchen makes for fantastically intimate professional relationships. Of course, this is often as problematic as it can be beautiful. Especially within an industry that has almost no upward mobility for its workers. As is often possible in theatre and other fields, workers are sometimes willing to face poor pay and toxic relationships in kitchens because they are so deeply in love with working with food. I believe there are too-few contemporary dramas that raise the lid on this reality."
